Following WHO recommendation, only Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN's), which require no further treatment during their expected life span (of average 3 to 5 years according the use, type and fabric origin), should be purchased. LLIN's allow for better and effective protection against mosquitoes and other insects and have to be considered as part of an overall strategy related to malaria control, as impregnated nets decrease morbidity from between 50%-70%. There are different types of netting material (polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene). The most commonly used for LLIN, and for which WHO recommendations have been developed, are polyester (PES) and polyethylene (PE).

In the WHO position statement document for Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets, the WHO recommends a move away from polyester made nets.

All shipping volumes indicated are approximate, as they depend on number of nets per bales. WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme approved LLIN on: www.who.int/whopes/en.

It is important to keep in mind that "LLIN" does not mean "WHO approved". Many wholesalers propose LLIN's which are not WHO approved, and should not be supplied.

All IOM Non-Food Items (NFIs) have been designed, manufactured, and packaged for distribution ensuring minimal impacts on the environment. Through rigorous Quality Assurance processes along with risk and life cycle assessments, NFIs are evaluated holistically throughout their entire life cycle on their impact on the environment and for improved durability to enable reaching beyond their intended service life. Hence, reducing the need for frequent replacements. IOM NFIs can be recycled and further re-purposed or upcycled to suit multiple uses such as converting to different usage like handbags, car covers, recycled wastewater collection etc.

All unnecessary sub-packaging made of single-use plastics are avoided. When sub-packaging is exceedingly necessary, IOM prefers 100% compostable bio-plastic packaging made from biomass or unbleached, natural-coloured, recycled paper or using paper with FSC forest management certification.
